Crellin Grove - The Camberwell Rebuild

The Crellin Grove Project is a project that goes back some years. It was one of the first renovation projects the team at Firstangle worked on in the early years of the business being set up. The project over its design/construction time wore many different design faces & originally started out as a large double storey addition to the existing home which had a basement garage. This original design was very much a "Frank Lloyd Wright" inspired design & once completed the design was rendered & prepared for construction. However due to cost restrictions the developer ran into it was quickly scrapped & redesigned. The end result is what we termed a "Neo Deco" residence which whilst current, modern & everything a purchaser would want from a home it was respectful to the vast number art deco homes in the area.

The pre renovated home was a single level residence (Basement Garage) that spilled across the lands fall from left to right & made for an interesting challenge on the drawingboard. Once the original design had been created & budgets had changed the new design came together quite easily. The facade was retained in its original format with the small change of rendering it in crisp white with a new entry porch created to show it off to the street. The more complicated portions of this design & renovation project were the hidden issues with ensuring the new garage worked in with the existing one, which has now been converted into a theatre room with surround sound & projector as well as access to an underground brick cellar that was discovered during the demolition phase. This cellar was repaired where needed & can now store 1000's of bottles of wine or craft beer.

From there we re-worked the entire rear portion of the home from the rear wall of the front two rooms back. A complete gutting of the internal rear walls took place in order to achieve an ensuite off the existing master bedroom & a separate bathroom & what was once the kitchen/diner area has now been converted into two new spacious bedrooms with a third minor bedroom over the hall. Avoiding the rooms as you walk through the grand entrance hall you are brought into the new hub of this home, the astonishing kitchen/meals/living area which has a grand ceiling height of 3.5m which is a significant increase from the original part of the residence which sits at 2.7m. the stepping down from the original portion of the house into this new addition with the raised ceiling creates a defined sense of grandeur usually reserved for homes in the inner city suburbs of Toorak & South Yarra. With the increased ceiling height there was a need to install oversized windows & doors which look out onto the rear patio area & rear yard which have been beautifully landscaped.

An open fire to one end & a stunningly designed & detailed boutique kitchen to the other end with all the modern features a good kitchen requires finishes off this grand room. From there you can step down the new stairs that lead into the underground portion of the home which contains a small study & the theatre/cellar, however if you look up as you head down the stairs you are greeted by an etched glass window which has been created in keeping with the deco styled theme & is a slight play on the FIrstangle logo.

A home of grandeur & a home that stamps its identity on the site the Crellin Grove Project was at the time (2008) the largest & most expensive renovation/project the team at Firstangle had worked on & to this day still stands as one of the more magnificently beautiful homes we have had the pleasure of working on.
